Who Can Volunteer for the ERMRC? Practicing, retired, or otherwise employed medical professionals, such as physicians, veterinarians, nurses, EMT/paramedics, pharmacists, nurse assistants, and others. Social workers, physical therapists, public health and mental health counselors along with the medical personnel can add an important component to the team. Volunteers for the ERMRC are not required to respond if a disaster strikes but being a member will allow you the capability to respond if you are available. Community members without medical training can assist with administrative and other essential support functions. Volunteers must be 18 years of age. What Do The ERMRC Volunteers Do? The responsibilities of ERMRC volunteers vary, depending on the nature of the needs in the community. ERMRC volunteers can assist during emergencies and assist with public initiatives and ongoing community health outreach and education efforts. Major emergencies can overwhelm the capabilities of first responders, particularly during the first 12 to 72 hours. Medical and other health volunteers can provide an important "surge" capacity during this critical period. They also can augment medical staff shortages at local medical and emergency facilities. In short, communities often need medically trained individuals to fill in the gaps in their emergency response plans and to improve their response capabilities overall. The non-medical members help with communications, transportation, patient tracking, supplies and many other much needed support functions. Everyone who volunteers to help when a disaster occurs becomes a vital part of his or her community. |
